Termination of Pregnancy (TOP) Services Tairawhiti Region

Since March 2020 women have the right to request a termination of pregnancy up until 20 weeks gestation without a referral from a medical practitioner.

National Abortion Telemedicine Service

The TOP service operates within a wider sexual and reproductive health service during business hours Monday to Friday.  The Community Clinic is never locked down.

Consults can be made via appointment or on a ‘walk in’ basis.  Whanau support is welcomed.

All services are free of charge to all New Zealand citizens and residents.  This includes medications.

Termination Services

The Community Clinic is a ONE STOP service for first trimester abortion.  Ultrasound, blood tests, cervical and sexual health screens are all conducted within the initial consultation as required.

Every woman has the opportunity for an in-depth conversation about her situation and needs with a Midwife/Counsellor who will follow through their process and provide support as needed.

Both MEDICAL and SURGICAL termination are available through the Community Clinic.  Medical up until 63 days gestation and surgical up until 13 weeks and 6 days gestation via the Day of Surgery Unit at Gisborne Hospital.

Pregnancies beyond these dates but below 19 weeks and 2 days gestation are referred to the Te Mahoe Unit at Wellington Hospital.  Travel and accommodation costs for the woman and a supporter are covered by the Community Clinic.

Care of the Products of Conception

Individually crafted burial ipo are available free of charge to assist in the return of the taonga to the whenua.

Aftercare

Women are encouraged to return to the Community Clinic for follow up and contraception.  All contraception including; mirena, copper IUD, jadelle, depo provera and oral contraceptive pills are available free of charge.

If needed further counselling is also available.
