Where to go

The Women's Clinic - Palmerston North

Abortion services in the Mid-Central region are accessed through The Women's Clinic in Palmerston North. All women from the region considering abortion will be assessed at The Women's Clinic.

The clinic is funded to provide medical abortion to Mid-Central residents. Local residents who wish to access funded surgical abortion will be referred from the clinic to either Te Mahoe unit in Wellington or Wairarapa Hospital depending on their location in the region.

The Women's Clinic offers privately funded medical and surgical abortion services to non Mid-Central residents.

The First Step

You can contact the clinic directly on 0800 226 784 (0800 Abortion).

The reception staff will book you an appointment with the clinic nurse. During the nurse consultation you will be able to discuss your situation and will be given more information about your options. The nurse will also organise some essential blood and swab tests. Ultrasound scanning is also performed at the clinic.

For women who prefer medical abortion this will be provided by the Women's Clinic. If you require surgical abortion you will be referred to either the Te Mahoe unit in Wellington or Wairarapa Hospital depending on where you are located in the region.

Counselling

All women who book at The Women’s Clinic will be referred to the Social Work department at Palmerston North Hospital so that they can be offered counselling.  This service is free of charge to NZ residents and offers the opportunity to discuss the social and emotional aspects of the decision to terminate a pregnancy. This counselling session is optional, unless you are referred for surgical termination in Te Mahoe Unit in Wellington where prior attendance at counselling is mandatory. The counsellor is also available to you after you have been through the termination.

Medical Abortion at The Women's Clinic

Medical Abortion is available up to 9 weeks of pregnancy for women who live within an hour’s travel of Palmerston North and are living in a home situation where miscarriage is practical. Medical abortion is funded for MId-Central residents.

The medication for the abortion MUST be taken whilst you are at the clinic. You will then return home for the miscarriage to occur, this usually happens between 1 and 8 hours after taking the pills. In some cases you will need to return to the clinic within 48 hours for a further dose of medication if the first dose has failed to make you miscarry.
