Abortion Services in New Zealand

Abortion Statistics

The Abortion Supervisory Committee has a legal obligation to collect statistics on abortion. Statistics are collected anonymously from every abortion patient by the abortion provider, by completing a form called an "ASC4 ". These statistics are collated by Statistics New Zealand.

Statistics from 1997-2007 can be found on the Statistics New Zealand website.

For your information, we have included the latest tables from 2007 although at this stage data is incomplete.

(2) Per 1,000 mean female estimated resident population aged 45-49 years.
(3) The total abortion rate, in a particular year, is the average number of abortions 1,000 women would have during their reproductive life if they were exposed to the abortion rates characteristic of various childbearing age groups in that year.
(4) Half of those women having an abortion are older than this age, and half are younger.
